History of Zeta Tau Alpha

Founded in 1898, Zeta Tau Alpha was started by nine women at Longwood University, formerly known as the Virginia State Female Normal School, located in Farmville, Virginia. ZTA was part of the "Farmville Four", which is the name given to the first four sororities founded at this school. In 1902, a member of the Alpha Chapter, Grace Elcan Garnett, brought fourth the foundation of their motto: seek the noblest.

As of 2023, Zeta Tau Alpha has over 290,000 lifetime members, as well as 172 active chapters and 228 alumnae chapters.
